Bill's Roots

I wanted to share a little history of myself and horses with those interested in training here . I can't really remember not being around horses ,  i have an earlier picture of my Father holding me on a horse probably at one year of age . Here I am with my first pony , Sandee. I think I was around eight. Notice that I am dressed in my favorite Western outfit BUT, my father a classical rider , member of the last mounted calvary unit , mounted patrol officer , steeple chase rider and polo player would have no part of anything but the proper seat and two handed position on the reins , it drove me nuts at the time . He was my first teacher and he showed me a lot , a lot more than I was ready  for at the time I am afraid. He was a superb rider.

Here is another shot of Sandee and I hacking out and stopping by to see my new horse, Tonto the quarter horse  note the square stance and my hands again , this is not something I learned yesterday . Tonto was my first large horse
To the right is a close up of one of the pictures so you can see what I mean , note the hand position and the horse being perfectly square , even here he was telling me of the balance of the horse and how my hands and seat controlled him . He was relentelss on hands and postion for the good of the horse and rider .
I had many horses after Sandee, their was Tonto the quarter horse, Buttons the paint, and Major the Morgan -Arab to name a few . All of these horses were trained by my father and I, as i got older I did more . Skip forward here to 1990. At that time I was realy interested in classiclay riding and training the Tennesse Walker . Here I am riding Rogue to one of our many blue ribbons.  At this time, I realy wanted to start a movement to train and ride the walking horse in tests more like dressage tests , I took a lot of flack from some trainers who did not want to see things change that much but we had some fun and I learned more about training in a different way.
Here is my first real influence from a teacher other than my father who was superbly classicaly trained and is the leading Authority on the French Tradition in my opinion in the USA and one of the great Baucherists in the world , my friend and the next teacher I found that I wanted to learn from ,  Jean Claude Racinet . His books (all of them) are on the required reading list for my students as he is a genius. Jean Claude taught me much not only about riding but training as well

In 1998 I met my greatest teacher and the last teacher I will ever look for . Master Luis Valenca of Portugal. I choose to learn every aspect from this great teacher I could and so for the last nine years I have made numerous trips each year to ride and study . Many of the horses I had the pleasure of riding and at the same time was involved in their training under his eye I have been able to bring home for this school . Please understand this is not just buying a trained horse and bringing it home . I have learned to train and ride every one of them along the way , from an unbroken horse through the high school and airs ,work in Hand  lunging , , Jaw flexions , long reining , psychology  etc . I choose not to be self taught but to obtain the finest academic training possible . I still travel to Portugal yearly  to continue my studies in all aspects of training and riding and bring that home for my students who may benifit from true classical art and training right at home . By the way if just anyone buys a trained horse and they do not know how to continue its training and riding correctly , soon you can still have a big mess on your hands .
